Waller turns to Irish apprentice Magorrian

Premier trainer Chris Waller has compared utilising apprentice Lee Magorrian’s three-kilogram claim to a drop in grade for Wine Tales.

The Irish-born Magorrian is with Waller’s stable on a scholarship from New Zealand which in the past has been awarded to Danielle Johnson, Jason Collett, his sister Alysha and Chris Dell.

Magorrian has ridden 96 winners in New Zealand reducing his claim to one kilogram, but because of the way their races are classified he is still eligible to claim three in in Australia.

“That’s a massive thing. Six ratings points, it’s basically like dropping a horse in grade so it’s a big plus,” Waller said on his weekly video update.

Magorrian rode Wine Tales when the horse was second first-up at Rosehill over 1200m on October 29 and gets another chance on her in Saturday’s Club Marconi Armatrice Handicap at the same track and distance.

“Obviously apprentices have a claim because they’re not quite as effective as senior riders and they do make mistakes,” Waller said.

“Taking that into consideration, I think it gives Wine Tales a good chance to run well first-up as she did on Saturday.”

Magorrian has two other chances for his first Australian win at Rosehill, picking up the rides on Trafalgar and Redoutable Heart for Waller.

After the claim Wine Tales will shoulder 58kg as she goes up against race favourite Daysee Doom who will be ridden by trainer Ron Quinton’s apprentice Andrew Adkins.

Adkins, who claims 2kg, was on Daysee Doom when she won her most recent start at Randwick on October 22.

Despite that win coming over 1400m, Quinton has elected to drop her back to 1200m as she looks to extend her winning record to five from seven starts.

Daysee Doom is the $2.80 top pick ahead of Painted Firetail at $6, while Alart and Nudierudie share the third line of betting at $7.

Wine Tales is an $8 hope along with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Yuma Desert.
