Victorian starters on hold for Birchley

Queensland trainer Liam Birchley will not race a horse in Victoria for the remainder of the season.

Birchley, who has been a regular at Victorian carnivals on on a visiting trainer’s permit, was issued with a show cause notice on January 12,

He was issued with Racing Victoria stewards’ charges three days earlier following investigations into the Lovani case and alleged raceday treatment.

Stewards have accepted an undertaking from Birchley that he will not enter any horses in Victoria before September, or the finalisation of the inquiry and have withdrawn his show cause notice.

They have also reserved their position on issuing a further show cause notice should the matter not be finalised by September.

Birchley has maintained his innocence and has confirmed his intention to plead not guilty to the charges at a Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board hearing.

A show cause hearing involving trainer Tony Vasil will proceed on Thursday.
