Vega Magic on track for another big prize
Lindsay Park has one eye on the first Group One race of the season and the other on the world’s richest sprint race.
With a spot already confirmed in October’s Everest for one of its top sprinters, the stable is hoping success in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes at Caulfield gets a spot for another of its stars.
Redkirk Warrior is favoured to take the Star Casino Everest slot offered to Lindsay Park with senior trainer David Hayes hoping success on Saturday gains Vega Magic a slot.
The Goodwood winner is one of four Lindsay Park gallopers entered in Saturday’s 1400m-race.
He will be joined by Seaburge while Grand Rosso runs in the 1400m-handicap with He Or She expected to run in the Penny Edition Stakes in Adelaide.
Hayes would like an Everest decision as quickly as possible after Saturday’s race.
“We’ll want to know fairly quickly because we’ll have to think about whether we get Vega Magic ready for the Makybe Diva or come back to the Sir Rupert Clarke,” Hayes said.
“But if he gets a slot into the Everest, then he won’t race again.”
Spelled after his Goodwood success, Vega Magic carried 60.5kg to win the Listed Regal Roller Stakes first-up at Caulfield on August 19.
Craig Williams replaces the suspended Damien Oliver aboard Vega Magic while the Seaburge ride goes to Regan Bayliss.
Seaburge hasn’t raced since finishing last on a heavy track in the Rosehill Guineas in March with his most recent victory coming in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington 12 months earlier.
Hayes said Seaburge had his return delayed after taking some skin off a bumper when second in a Cranbourne trial on August 8.
“I didn’t want to risk running him until the hair grew back on the bumper,” Hayes said.
“He could have run in the Lawrence (August 19) and I was tossing that up.
“He’s going very well and fresh-up I thought I’d save him for this.”
