Twitter reacts as Crows and Tigers reach AFL Grand Final

AFL Twitter chat for Australia

EXPECTATIONS were not especially high for the third week of the 2017 AFL Finals Series.

A fortnight of one-sided clashes had left punters hoping for nothing more than a couple of competitive games.

Regrettably, Friday’s prelim offered more of the same as Adelaide hammered Geelong to reach the decider for the first time since 1998.

‘Love’ might be too strong a word for it, but there was plenty of admiration on Twitter for the Crows and their achievements in the wake of some tough times.

It is a little over two years since the death of Phil Walsh, who was in only his first season as head coach at the time of his passing.

Adelaide have also lost a heap of top-end talent to rival clubs over the past decade.

The most notable of those to depart was Patrick Dangerfield, who caused a few rumblings in South Australia with some choice remarks in the lead-up.

While meant in jest, the Geelong superstar’s cheeky asides regarding his former place of residence were rather taken to heart by the Adelaide locals.

It would be fair to say the Crows had the last laugh.

It was Brett Deledio in the spotlight on Saturday afternoon as Greater Western Sydney took on the might of Richmond.

Over 94,000 packed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and precious few of those were dressed in charcoal and orange.

Every raucous cheer for the Tigers was met with an equally noisy jeer whenever Deledio went anywhere near the ball.

Whatever you think about the booing, it made for one hell of an atmosphere as two talented teams went blow for blow.

The first half was a vast improvement on recent finals fare, with neither side managing to establish and hold a solid lead.

It was a different story after the break, however, as the Tigers trampled the tiring Giants to end 35 years of misery.

Thus, Adelaide and Richmond to duke it out in the 2017 AFL Grand Final.

With the Western Bulldogs making history last year, the Crows and the Tigers are the two sides that have waited longest for another chance at the big dance.

Either way, a drought will be broken.
