Trainer foresight to help Allknight Saint

Some successful weather forecasting by trainer Lauren Herne has helped veteran Allknight Saint keep a fitness edge for Doomben.

As is the case with many of his rivals in the Madison Cleaning Services Handicap (1350m), Allknight Saint missed a run when Doomben was washed out last Saturday.

However, Herne gave Allknight Saint a good hit-out in the morning to keep him ticking over.

“I train out of Doomben now and it was raining early on Saturday morning but officials said the meeting would go ahead,” Herne said.

“The old boy (Allknight Saint) was rubbing his hooves together at the prospect of getting on a wet track.

“But it was pretty obvious we wouldn’t have gotten to his race even if we went ahead – he was in the last. So it was an easy decision to work him.”

Allknight Saint has won twice on heavy tracks and has a solid record over the Doomben 1350m of Saturday’s race.

The gelding won the Beaudesert Cup three runs back and as the winner of nine races is well placed on the minimum weight.

Herne is also bemused at the huge odds ($251) being offered on another of her handy wet-track horses, Outstrip in the EJ Cast Iron Handicap (2000m).

Outstrip won a strong Townsville race during three runs in a northern campaign and has had a 1600m run since returning to get ready for Saturday

“He is also down in the weights and likes wet tracks so here is hoping,” Herne said.
