Tottenham Hotspur hosts Manchester City on Sunday in the top matchup of this weekend’s English Premier League card. The Citizens enter the 2021-22 season looking for their fourth EPL title in five years.
Tottenham’s seventh-place finish with a record of 18-8-12 last season was the club’s worst finish on the EPL table since the 2008-09 season. The Spurs had a tumultuous offseason as well with Harry Kane, the club’s leading scorer for seven seasons running, expressing his desire to leave. Kane’s status for Sunday’s game is questionable as the superstar striker is reportedly fit to play but has not been training with the team in the weeks leading up to the season.
Manchester City reeled off 13 straight wins in the middle of last season to shake off a slow start en route to the club’s third EPL championship in the last four years. City finished the 2020-21 season with a 27-5-6 record, clearing second-place Manchester United by a full 12 points atop the table. The defending champions paid a staggering £100 million transfer fee to Aston Villa to acquire 25-year-old attacking midfielder Jack Grealish and are reportedly set to offered Tottenham £150 million for Henry Kane. Money is clearly no object for Man City in its quest to be the best club in the world.
There is no question that Manchester City will finish higher on the table than Tottenham Hotspur will this season. Once Pep Guardiola’s club has everyone available and gets into top form, we will likely see City tear through the Premier League with a massive winning streak like it did last season. With all of that said, Manchester won’t be in top form this Sunday. Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne are out with injuries and the club hasn’t had much time for league preparation with many of its top players out playing in the Euro 2020 tournament.
Tottenham has played well early under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo with a preseason 1-0 win over rival Arsenal and a 2-2 draw against Chelsea. Even if Kane doesn’t play, Son Heung-min is perfectly capable of finishing at the net should opportunities arise. Needless to say, anything close to Manchester City’s best effort results in an easy victory for the defending champions. But don’t be surprised if City gets off to a slow start here and Tottenham steals a point.
