Top tweets from Sharks vs. Broncos on NRL Thursday

NRL twitter
CRONULLA Sharks endured a rough start to their title defence on Thursday night, losing to Brisbane Broncos in the opening game of NRL 2017.

Social media did a roaring trade, so let’s take a look at the best reactions, opinions and gags from Twitter.

Broncos win, punters unimpressed

The Broncos took the points, but there was a steady undercurrent of disappointment in the quality of both sides early on.

That was a popular line of speculation, with more than one tweeter recalling Brisbane’s shock loss to Warrington Wolves in the preseason World Club Series.

Even the winning coach was looking thoroughly unimpressed, although that is nothing new from Wayne Bennett.

Kahu’s historic double

One of the evening’s highlights came from Jordan Kahu, who finished off a slick Broncos move to open the scoring five minutes in.

In doing so, the Kiwi star become the first player in NRL history to score the opening try of the season in two consecutive years.

Rave reviews for Milford

Kahu got things off to a flyer, but it was Anthony Milford who shone brightest of all.

The pick of his plays was a stunning second-half move that left Paul Gallen and the Sharks defence for dead.

The 22-year-old Bronco was named man of the match in a powerful all-round display that left some punters very excited indeed.

Ben is a hunted man

Opinion was split on the performance of Ben Hunt, who is playing his last season with the Broncos after agreeing to join St George Illawarra in 2018.

The million-dollar man copped some vicious criticism from the gallery and the commentary box alike, not least for his kicking game.

Some were surprised at the level of scorn heaped on the three-time Australia rep, but the overwhelming feeling was that the Dragons had blown their bankroll on a dud.

Even the broadcast technicians were in on the act.

Was anyone even watching?

Thursday night’s clash at Shark Park marked the NRL broadcast debut of the new Fox League channel, which claimed 231,000 viewers nationwide.

The figures were even higher overall for the free-to-air showing on Nine GEM, although a mere 40,000 tuned in across Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth combined.

Perhaps it was a scheduling conflict that caused such poor ratings in the southern states.
