The Gold Coast Titans return to the comfort of home at Cbus Super Stadium on Friday night as they take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs in round seven of the 2021 NRL Premiership. The Titans were thoroughly embarrassed in Mudgee in their last start, while the Rabbitohs got across the line over the Tigers in what was one of the most sensational finishes to a game of rugby league ever seen.
The Titans have averaged 35 points in their two games at home this season, and they will need to score something similar to feel safe against the juggernaut South Sydney attack. Gold Coast will also have to do it without Tino Fa’asuaumaleaui, while the Rabbitohs will be without fullback Latrell Mitchell, who has been rubbed out on the back of several contrary conduct charges.
Titans vs Rabbitohs match analysis
The Gold Coast Titans have scored 42 and 0 in their last two games, so trying to make sense of that inconsistency is difficult. They will need to produce an attacking masterclass to win the game but will find it difficult to do so without Tino Fa’asuamaleaui running off the back fence. Souths have conceded tries to fullbacks in four of the five games in which they’ve had points scored against them, so it might be time to back AJ Brimson to get on the score sheet. Another stat that doesn’t bode well for the home team is their terrible home record against the Rabbitohs, who they haven’t defeated at Cbus Super Stadium since 2009.
Just what Wayne Bennett decides to do with his backline sans Latrell Mitchell might not be known until an hour before kickoff. Alex Johnston and Dane Gagai shape as options at fullback, while Cody Walker could even move back there to allow Benji Marshall to start. It’s a good headache to have, and despite Mitchell’s absence, the -6.5 line looks too hard to pass up. Walker shapes as a great option to score first regardless of where he lines up, but even more so if he moves to fullback.
Key matchup: Jamal Fogarty vs Adam Reynolds
Adam Reynolds continues to prove his value to the South Sydney Rabbitohs with a stellar start to 2021, and the Titans are going to need Jamal Fogarty to play with the same kind of control that his opposite number does. Fogarty is a competent halfback who gets the Titans around the park well, but can he take his kicking game to another level to keep the big South Sydney forwards turning around? The Titans forward pack has been their strength, but they will need a big performance from Fogarty to get them across the line.
Titans vs Rabbitohs betting predictions
South Sydney Rabbitohs -6.5
Souths will continue their awesome record at Robina and win the game, and it would be wise to take them at the -6.5 line. Without Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, the Titans lack the starch in the middle of the field to get the job done.
South Sydney Rabbitohs -6.5
