The Tony Pike-trained The Bostonian has won the Listed Daybreak Lover at the Sunshine Coast.

The Bostonian has made a belated but winning start to the winter carnival to win the Listed Daybreak Lover at the Sunshine Coast, giving New Zealand trainer Tony Pike a treble at the meeting.

The Daybreak Lover (1200m) was moved from Doomben on Saturday to Caloundra a day later to guard against rain at the Stradbroke Handicap meeting.

As it turned out Doomben was run in sunshine while the Caloundra meeting was run under rainy skies.

It didn’t worry Pike’s team who won three races in a row with Sacred Rebel ($2.15), Terra Sancta ($3.60) and the The Bostonian ($12).

Pike sent a small team to Queensland this winter and has been hampered by bad barriers and bad luck.

Terra Sancta won at Ipswich and Caloundra before finishing sixth in the Group One Queensland Oaks.

She won Sunday’s Oaks Resort Hotel Handicap (1800m) at Caloundra, the race before The Bostonian claimed the Daybreak Lover.

The Bostonian, who was having his first start in Queensland, is closely related to multiple Group One winner Mufhasa who as King Mufhasa in Australia where he won the 2011 Toorak Handicap and 2012 Futurity Stakes.

Owner/breeder David Archer told Sky Channel that Pike missed the Caloundra meeting because he was being treated for a broken hand suffered in a fall on Saturday.

Archer said The Bostonian, who is by 2011 Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux, had also had his share of bad luck since arriving in Queensland.

“He has been here seven weeks but this is his first start,” Archer said.

“He has been scratched because of bad barriers and then he got bitten on the nose by a spider and had to be treated.”

Archer said there were several options in Queensland over the last few weeks of the carnival for The Bostonian to win again.

Jockey Michael Cahill, said The Bostonian had been a most impressive winner and was capable of winning in better company.
