Taylor Fritz makes big US Open final prediction against Sinner
Taylor Fritz takes on Jannik Sinner in the final of the US Open on Sunday afternoon in New York, with the American a heavy underdog at most tennis betting sites ahead of the championship match.
However, Fritz has made an audacious prediction heading into the US Open final, with the No.12 seed declaring he believes he will beat the world No.1.
“I have a feeling I’m going to come out and play really well and win,” Fritz speculated in his post-match press conference after defeating Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final.
“I’ve always played well against Jannik. I think we’re one and one.
“I feel like I always hit the ball really nice off of his ball.
“When I play good tennis, I think that level is good enough to win.”
Fritz relaxed heading into US Open final
On Friday evening, Fritz won an epic five-setter against fellow American Tiafoe, the first time two Americans had met in the final four of a major for almost two decades.
He believes that match – which he came from behind in to win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 – was more stressful than planning in the US Open final.
“I had a 6 and 1 head-to-head leading into it,” said Fritz of his semi-final with Tiafoe.
“I’m not thinking I’m the favorite, but it’s tough to go in as, like, the record 6 to 1, this is to make a US Open final.
“Whoever wins it is the American that made it to the final.
“I mean, it’s a stressful situation to be in.”
The leading bookmakers had Fritz as the favourite to beat Tiafoe, but puts the American at long odds of $4 to prevail against Sinner.
It’s this lack of expectation which has Fritz relaxed ahead of his first-ever Grand Slam final.
“It’s different from playing the World No. 1 who you’re probably not going to be the favorite against,” Fritz explained.
“To be honest, I don’t think that I’m going to be put in a more stressful situation than I was [against Tiafoe] than playing in a final.
“I think [against Tiafoe] was much more stressful than me playing the final.
“I just feel good.”
