Tasmania takes out Origin Jockeys Series

Brendon McCoull and Craig Newitt have won the Origin Jockeys Series at Doomben for Tasmania.

Adelaide’s Jamie Kah continued her great record in Brisbane to win the final heat of the Origin Jockeys Series but it wasn’t enough to deny Tasmania a win in the series.

Six teams contested the series which was run in five heats over two days at Doomben.

Kah rated Lota Creek Gold ($6) perfectly in front to win the Canadian Club Plate (2000m) to lift South Australia to 15 points.

Tasmania won the day on 19 points from New Zealand on 18 points and Victoria on 17 points.

South Australia was next on 15 points from Queensland on 14 points and NSW on 12 points.

Jockey Craig Newitt, who was teamed with Brendon McCoull for the series, was the star for Tasmania winning two races including on Sofie’s Gold Class in the other heat run on Saturday.

“It was a great experience and as we were rated outsiders before the first heat we have really enjoyed winning,” Newitt said.

The Tasmanians were so excited they sprayed a bottle of champagne in the enclosure.

Kah was also happy to end the series with a victory and continued a trend of her riding a winner in her past three visits to Brisbane.

“I like this type of series because you get a chance to evaluate yourself against jockeys from all over the place,” said Kah, who will compete in a jockeys’ challenge in New Zealand next week.

Lota Creek Gold did his early racing in central Queensland but was sent to Gold Coast trainer Harold Norman earlier this year.

“He has had five starts for me and that was his second win. He will stay here for the moment but probably head back home for the Rockhampton Cup next year,” Norman said.
