Tarzino could cap big weekend for stable

Tarzino is aiming to show his bid to win the Caulfield Cup is on track with a strong showing in the Turnbull Stakes.

Tarzino could cap a big weekend for trainer and jockey Mick Price and Craig Newitt in his bid to show his Caulfield Cup campaign is on track in the Turnbull Stakes.

Newitt guided the Price-trained three-year-old Extreme Choice to a stunning win in the Group One Moir Stakes on Friday night at Moonee Valley.

And Newitt is convinced another of Price’s stable stars, Victoria Derby winner Tarzino, is still going well despite being unplaced in three weight-for-age runs this campaign.

He has flagged his intention to ride the horse closer to the speed when he steps to 2000m and chases a third Group One win in Sunday’s Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Tarzino was the Caulfield Cup favourite a month ago when weights were released but has since dropped down the pecking order to $26 heading into his final start before the Caulfield Cup.

“A lot of people have dropped off him, but Mick and I haven’t,” Newitt said.

“The horse is going well. He’ll roll forward from that gate (barrier eight) on Sunday. His runs have been good without been flattering in weight-for-age, but I’ve been very happy with him the whole way along.”

Tarzino, winner of the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m, is also at $26 for the Turnbull with in-form Godolphin gelding Hartnell the $2 favourite.

Kerrin McEvoy reunites Our Ivanhowe for the first time since winning the Doomben Cup on the import in May.

Our Ivanhowe was fifth in the Makybe Diva Stakes first-up.

“He was warming up and warming up as the race went on in the Makybe Diva, so I think getting out to 2000 metres is going to suit him better,” McEvoy said.

“It’s nice to be able to get back on him and see if we can keep the association going.

“He’s a horse that obviously sprang to everyone’s attention running good races without much luck in the Cups last year, so if he happens to get on what I think is his preferred ground with a bit of give in it then he might be able to show an improved effort.”
