Suspenders edges back-to-back midweek wins
Trainer Gerald Ryan is considering saving Suspenders for the rich Magic Millions raceday after she overcame a big weight to score back-to-back midweek wins.
The filly held off stablemate Diddums ($21) in a photo finish to the Myboycharlie @ Vinery Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Carrying 62kg, Suspenders drifted to $3 before the race with third placegetter Miss Ballantine jumping the $2.80 favourite.
“It’s a good effort especially because the other filly is race fit,” Ryan said.
“She’s given her 6.5 kilograms so she’s done a really good job.”
A $450,000 yearling at the Magic Millions sale, Suspenders is raced by long-time stable clients Damion Flower, who was the original owner of her sire Snitzel, and his wife Camilla.
The lure of the $2 million Magic Millions three-year-old classic on the Gold Coast in January may be enough to tempt Ryan to abandon plans to head to Melbourne.
“We’ll just sit down and decide whether we go to Melbourne for a little stakes race or whether we freshen her up for the Magic Millions,” Ryan said.
Jockey James McDonald said Suspenders had done it tough during the run after sitting outside the leader.
“It was an outstanding effort,” McDonald said.
