Steyne helps Adkins continues winning ways

On the day he received his award as last season’s champion Sydney apprentice, Andrew Adkins has maintained the momentum with victory aboard Steyne at Randwick.

Adkins steered the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained five-year-old to a comprehensive two-length win in the Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (1600m).

The 19-year-old still has a 1.5kg claim and used it to advantage on the $3.30 favourite who carried 51.5kg.

Adkins has been schooled by the best, joining Ron Quinton after beginning his apprenticeship at home in the Northern Rivers with Marc Quinn.

As well as being recognised as Sydney’s leading apprentice, Adkins received a trophy named in honour of the late jockey Athol Mulley, rider of champion Bernborough.

“It was an honour to receive the award and it’s great to keep it going with a winner today,” Adkins said.

“And it’s especially good to be able to get a winner for the Snowden stable and the owners Triple Crown.”

Adkins will end his junior career on Melbourne Cup day in early November.
