Spright storms to victory in G3 Healy Stks

Rejuvenated mare Spright overcame a bout of home sickness to win the Group Three WJ Healy Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

After Spright had been struggling on wet tracks at her two previous Brisbane runs, Frazer decided to send the mare back to his Hawkesbury stables.

“I took her home for 10 days after her last run. My son Jordan who has been looking after her up here said she wasn’t happy,” Frazer said.

“She goes out in her paddock at home where she’s a lot more relaxed and I thought I’d put the blinkers back on her.”

Frazer decided to give the go-ahead for a Healy Stakes start after the mare worked brilliantly at Hawkesbury a week before the Healy.

Spright’s win enabled jockey Michael Cahill to renew an association with Frazer.

“Before I moved to Queensland in 1996 I’d ridden a few times for Garry and it was good to team up again,” Cahill said.

“Garry had asked me to ride a couple of Magic Millions two-year-old types earlier in the season for him but I had other commitments so it was good he kept me in mind for this race with Spright.”

The mare will be spelled before being aimed at a spring carnival campaign in Melbourne.

“Getting back on top of the ground was another factor in her favour. She can really let down on a firm track,” Frazer said.
