Single Gaze arrives In Brisbane for winter

Group One-winning mare Single Gaze has arrived in Brisbane to prepare for a big winter carnival.

Group One-winning mare Single Gaze has travelled well to Brisbane as she prepares for what could be a career-defining winter.

Single Gaze is the TAB’s early favourite for the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.

She won the 2016 Group One Vinery Stud Stakes and was a leading chance in the ATC Australian Oaks.

Disaster struck when Single Gaze fell during the run and her jockey Kathy O’Hara needed surgery for a sternoclavicular injury.

Olive decided to abort Single Gaze’s spring campaign to give her more time off.

“She had bad bruising and we decided to give her a nice long spell. She didn’t come back until late last year,” Olive said.

Single Gaze had two trials on her home track at Canberra before having her first start in 10 months when unplaced in the Group Two Millie Fox Stakes.

She was also unplaced in the Group One Coolmore Classic before running a much-improved third in the Group Three Neville Sellwood Stakes on March 25.

Single Gaze’s most recent runs have been on heavy Sydney tracks but she is likely to get a dry surface on Saturday.

“She won the Vinery on a good track so she can handle most conditions,” Olive said.

Single Gaze arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday morning and pleased Olive.

“She looks to have travelled up very well and I would expect her to be right for Saturday,” he said.

Olive has special affection for Single Gaze who cost $70,000 as a yearling but has already won more than $1.1 million prize money.

“Provided she comes through Saturday’s race we will push on into the winter as there appear to be plenty of races for her,” he said.

Single Gaze has been to Brisbane before, running unplaced in the 2015 Champagne Classic and the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes as a juvenile but Oliver says she is obviously more seasoned.

Her regular partner O’Hara will make the trip from Sydney to ride Single Gaze and will also be aboard Jason Coyle-trained stablemates Sweet Serendipity in the Ascot Quality and Siren’s Fury in the Princess Stakes.
