Gold Coast gelding Siegfried was finally able to win over his regular jockey Jeff Lloyd with his Doomben win on Saturday.
Siegfried ($3.10) was given the run of the race before scoring by 3/4 length to Sir Moments ($16).
The gelding has been racing since January and won three races as well as finishing third in the Listed Weetwood Hcp at Toowoomba last week.
Lloyd has been aboard him in all of his recent runs and he admits he hasn’t always been a fan of Siegfried.
“He really has come good. About six months ago we were thinking of getting rid of him,” Lloyd said.
Stable foreman Trent Edmonds said a good long spell last year had been the making of Siegfried.
“He is racing well. If he draws a good barrier he is always very hard to beat,” Edmonds said.
“He had barrier one today and Jeff was able to run the race the way Siegfried likes.”
Edmonds said Siegfried had never really been considered a winter carnival horse but he could have earned himself a shot at some of the lower-level stakes race.
Sir Moments ran his best run of late coming from well back for second and could back up in the Listed Tails Handicap next Saturday.
Trainer David Vandyke had a double but not with the horses he expected when Deep Image ($8.50) and Kylie’s Fame ($16) won.
Deep Image showed he much preferred dry tracks when he won the BRC Membership Plate I’m A Rippa ($26) in a tight finish.
“We have always had an opinion of him and at his first start he ran second to top horse Winning Rupert in a stakes race,” Vandyke said.
“He has won two of his four starts. I am sure he will be up to the three-year-old races in the winter carnival.”
Vandyke thought he would also win the Blokes Day Out Plate (1350m) but with Marabel ($3.70) not Kylie’s Fame.
“Kylie’s Fame is a very well-bred mare being out of a stakes winner and being a half-sister to a stakes winner,” he said.
“But she has taken a while to really find out what it is all about.
“I really thought Marabel would beat her and win but Marabel got into a lot of trouble trying to get a clear run.”No tags for this post.
