She Will Reign ready for barrier trial

Ben Melham will be reunited with Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign when she makes her first public appearance since her Group One triumph.

Melham will fly to Sydney to ride the filly in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday morning with trainer Gary Portelli pleased with She Will Reign’s physical progress from her two-year-old season.

“She went to the paddock at 455 kilos and is 498 now,” Portelli said.

“Ben Melham will ride her in the trial on the course proper at Warwick Farm on Friday and again in her next trial but I’m not yet sure when and where that will be.”

Melham is on a diet and fitness regime to get to 51kg for the $10 million Everest on October 14.

But with her first start scheduled for September 29 in the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley, Craig Williams will ride her at 50kg with Melham believing that weight is beyond him.

The Group One Moir (1000m) and The Everest are the only two confirmed starts for She Will Reign this spring.

The winner of four of her five starts, She Will Reign was the first horse confirmed for The Everest after a deal struck between Darby Racing and slot holder Yu Long Investments.

The filly is the $6 second favourite for The Everest behind Chautauqua at $4.60 with English, Houtzen and Russian Revolution all at $11.

Houtzen, who finished fifth in the Slipper as favourite, will have a barrier trial at the Gold Coast on Monday.

Her trainer Toby Edmonds is also looking to kick her campaign off in Melbourne with the McEwen Stakes on September 9 among the options.

She will represent Aquis Farm in The Everest.
