Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for May 20, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, May 20, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Doomben Race 2: #1 Brigatine @ $2.35

One of the better bets on the card will be Brigantine in the second race of the day, as he will be dropping back from the Listed ATC Cup to a Class 3 Plate and rising from 1200m to 1350m second-up for this preparation. With only one other horse in single figures, this race appears to be a race between this gelding and Loves Me Likearock. This son of Astern should improve from his first-up run at the Sunshine Coast where he drew the car park and never got on the track, indicating that his 11th place finish by 1.7 lengths, isn’t as bad as it looks in the form guide. The luck at the barrier draw is still against the James Cummings-trained galloper – drawing barrier 14 of 19, but with the further distance and a lack of speed, we should see James Orman push forward and settle in the first five or six upon settling. If Brigantine gets a nice run in transit and doesn’t have to do too much work, he should be winning this.

Morphettville Race 4: #1 Let’sbefrankbaby @ $3.20

Let’sbefrankbaby brings an element of class to the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic and her best should see her blow her rivals away in the 2500m event. The Frankel filly has won twice at Cranbourne this preparation and her only “failure” came when finishing third in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes on April 15. She has only had one start at the 2500m in her career and that was when finishing 6.5 lengths off She’s Extreme in the Group 1 VRC Oaks. With winning confidence on her side this time in and with just 56kg on her back, look for Jamie Mott to have her settled just off the speed and with a nice staying performance, Let’sbefrankbaby should prove too good for this lot and is a clear best bet of the day at Morphettville.

Flemington Race 3: #9 Sigh @ $2.30

The Peter Moody-trained Sigh is set to return from a near five-month spell, and considering she has three wins from three first-up runs, she is too hard to pass up. The four-year-old mare produced and electric turn of foot at Sandown in BM70 grade when fresh during the summer, before being defeated by the barest of margins by Jungle Jim at the Flemington 1100m. She returns at the Flemington 1100m for this prep, and following that experience at the track and trip last time out, it looks inevitable that she will get the job done on Saturday. With Laura Lafferty on board claiming 3kg, she gets in with just 57kg on her back, and with a strong finish under her bonnet, look for Sigh to make punters cheerful early on in the meeting.

Rosehill Race 6: #5 Rediener @ $2.60

Since returning on March 22, Rediener has found some consistency in his racing, even finding a much-deserved win on April 25 at Randwick-Kensington. It was an enormous effort from back in the field, powering over his opposition to score a one-length win. The form out of that race has seemingly stacked up nicely, with the second placegetter, Semana, producing a subsequent win, while Rediener himself almost picked up back-to-back wins, running into third last start at Gosford on May 6. This son of Redoute’s Choice meet some key rivals much better at the weights, courtesy of apprentice Jaspar Franklin and his 3kg claim. He draws to find a much more economical run throughout the 1500m, and provided he’s in striking distance on Saturday, Rediener should prove too good in the finish.

Belmont Race 4: #3 Rear Admiral @ $2.05

Our best bet on the program will be the Sean & Jake Casey-trained Rear Admiral who will be looking to extend her unbeaten start to her career, after returning from a four-month layoff with a tough win over 1000m at Ascot on May 6. This three-year-old filly has won all her four race starts to date, with the latest being one of her best, as she was pressured in the lead throughout, before kicking clear to put up a winning margin and won by just over half a length. On Saturday, the daughter of Astern will step up to 1200m, where she is unbeaten from three attempts during her short career. Jordan Turner will continue his strong affiliation with this filly – seeking his fifth win from five rides – with the only query being that she will have to jump from barrier nine and cross the field to lead. If Turner can get Rear Admiral to jump well and find the front without doing too much work, she should be winning again.
