Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for May 13, 2023
The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, May 13, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.
All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au
Doomben Race 7: #1 Kovalica @ $1.90
After saluting as one of our best bets in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas last start, we will have Kovalica from the Chris Waller stable on top in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, as he continues his path to the Queensland Derby in two weeks’ time. This three-year-old gelded son of Ocean Park has won five of his seven starts to date, with his last start win in the Queensland Guineas being one of his better wins for his career, as he had to make up plenty of ground in the home straight after travelling wide throughout. Currently, Kovalica is the Queensland Derby favourite with the bookies and with a win in the Rough Habit Plate, we expect to see his odds shorten if he is to win on Saturday. James McDonald rode this guy first-up in Sydney when he finished third, and he will jump back aboard this weekend seeking his first win and book himself the Queensland Derby ride on this promising stayer.
Morphettville Race 3: #4 Platinum Wolf @ $3.00
The Kristi Evans-trained Platinum Wolf has won three of his last four starts, including two of his three runs this time in and we expect he will keep that form going on Saturday. The Puissance de Lune gelding won convincingly in a similar race to this at Murray Bridge on May 3 and we expect he will prove too good for his rivals once again. Teagan Voorham has a superb record aboard this bloke winning twice from as many rides and despite drawing barrier 11, we are confident he can absorb the speed in the race and flash home down the heart of the track with just 55kg on his back.
Flemington Race 4: #17 Altivo @ $1.85
Team Hawkes needed a scratching to get Altivo a run on Saturday and they got it early on in the week and he looks a clear best bet of the day on Saturday. The four-year-old gelding has won all three of his career starts and has done so in fine fashion. He resumed from a four-month spell with a dominant 2.75 length victory at Sandown when taking a sit off the speed before powering over the top of his rivals. He looks like he will only appreciate the Flemington mile and as long as Jye McNeil can slot in one off the rail, Altivo has a dynamic turn of foot and should be bringing up a fourth win from as many starts.

Scone Race 5: #3 Quantico @ $3.70
Quantico looks to have the class on his rivals in the Ortensia Stakes on Saturday afternoon and we’re happy to put him on top in the competitive affair. He’s set to return off a short 70-day spell and based on his first-up form, it’s generally when this son of I Am Invincible performs at his highest level. You only need to reference his first-up win last preparation in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes at Randwick on February 11 to be considering this lightly-raced six-year-old. His jump-out on May 1 also caught the eye, as he chased home the Doomben 10,000 favourite Giga Kick. The likes of Malkovich deserve respect in this market; however, the price for Quantico is overs for us and we consider him the one to beat on his form alone.
Belmont Race 3: #3 Rusty Dreams @ $2.00
We have been with Rusty Dreams from the Michael Lane stable at her last two starts, and even though she finished third last start and did a lot wrong at her first attempt at 1600m, we believe the drop back in distance to 1400m and a three-week freshen will be perfect for her. This three-year-old filly looks to be a very promising youngster on the rise, winning three of her four races to start her career. At her first attempt at 1400m, this daughter of Universal Ruler was way too good for a couple of her rivals that we she will meet again on Saturday. One of the two horses that have beaten her in her short career is the top weight in this race, Catch These Hands. However, with the top weight rising 1.5kg and our girl staying at the same weight, we should see her turn the tables on their last meeting. William Pike will have his first ride on Rusty Dreams, and if he can find the lead without doing too much work, she should be too good for this field.
