Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for July 8, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, July 8, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Caulfield Race 6: #2 Brigatine @ $2.60

Brigantine comes to Caulfield following a third behind Munhamek in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm and without a doubt brings the best form into this weak BM100. Three runs back he finished 1.6 lengths off subsequent Tatts Tiara winner Palaisipan, suggesting his best performance will blow away a field like this. Ben Melham will have him stalking the speed from barrier four, and Brigantine should prove a class above in the home stretch.

Randwick Race 1: #2 Cigar Flick @ $2.30

It’s been 126 days since Cigar Flick faced the starter, and she comes out of some very strong form lines from last preparation. After breaking her maiden status in her first career start on January 6, the filly then bumped into Learning To Fly in the Group 3 Widden Stakes and the Group 2 Reisling Stakes respectively. She wasn’t disgraced in either performance and has produced two eye-catching barrier trials heading into this first-up assignment. Epic Proportions is the galloper they need to chase down, but we’re confident Cigar Flick can resume a winner.

Doomben Race 7: #2 Dragonstone @ $2.45

It has been over a year since the Joseph Pride-trained Dragonstone has found the winner’s circle; however, this race marks a big class drop from his second-place finish in the Listed June Stakes at Randwick last start. On that day, the four-year-old gelding had nowhere to go when the field rounded the home turn and had to check off heels before letting down. After getting clear, this son of Mikki Isle thundered home but couldn’t pick up Spacewalk and went down by a long neck. James Orman will have his first ride on the horse this weekend, and with a good amount of speed expected in this race, it should set up perfectly for Dragonstone to unleash his superior finishing burst.

Gawler Race 7: #1 Exalted Fire @ $3.70

Michael Hickmott’s Exalted Fire was beaten less than a half-length when resuming at the Murray Bridge 1400m. Having led the field up, he was headed early in the home straight but kept finding under pressure to suggest he was worth following wherever he went next. The five-year-old gelding has two minor placings from three runs second-up, so he clearly takes great benefit from a fresh run. Campbell Rawiller’s claim gets the weight down to 59.5kg, and if Exalted Fire can gain an economical run just off the leaders, he should be winning.

Belmont Race 4: #5 Too Dardy @ $2.30

The Justine Erkelens-trained Too Dardy appears to be the best bet on the Belmont program, as he will strike a very winnable race, where his nearest rival is Berbere, who he beat last start. This three-year-old gelding could be undefeated this preparation if it wasn’t for the bad luck he found first-up. However, second-up there was no bad luck and this son of Demerit proved way too good for his rivals, running away with a dominant 1.2 length victory over 1000m at this track. Shaun O’Donnell has ridden this gelding at both of his starts this time in and with him retaining the ride on Saturday, we anticipate that he will be given another great opportunity to record his first win over 1200m.
