San Telmo gets second stakes chance

Talented gelding San Telmo has had a stop-start career but he is likely to get a second chance in a week to win a stakes race.

San Telmo was originally with Anthony Cummings in Sydney and then Brad Smith at Deagon before being sent to John Symons and Sheila Laxon at Caloundra.

He has had two starts for the Symons-Laxon training partnership for a third at the Sunshine Coast and seventh in last Saturday’s Group Three Tattersall’s Cup.

Symons said the plan was San Telmo would back up in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

“We had been looking at running (Provincial Stayers Final winner) I Feel Good in the Cup but he can’t handle wet tracks so we didn’t accept,” Symons said.

“But San Telmo’s run was good in the Tatt’s Cup and he has been placed all of his starts on heavy tracks.”

“He has won at 2200 metres twice and there has always been a bit of a staying wrap on him. Unfortunately we didn’t get him for races earlier in the carnival.”

The training partnership’s tough sprinter Irish Constabulary is likely to back up in the XXXX Open Hcp (1000m).

“He does go very well in the wet and he likes Caloundra,” Symons said.
