Ron Stewart to ride in Brisbane

The much-travelled Ron Stewart has linked with top jockey manager Garry Legg to help boost his move to Brisbane.

Legg, a former leading Brisbane apprentice and later a racing journalist, has managed several top jockeys including Chris Munce since taking on his new role.

Sydney’s champion apprentice in 2002/03, Stewart, 33, has ridden more than 500 winners in Singapore, Mauritius, Macau, South Australia and NSW.

He had his first Doomben ride since moving to Brisbane when unplaced on Another Whiskey on Saturday.

“Ron has been here for a month and working hard. He has had about a year off and in the meantime got his helicopter pilot’s licence,” Legg said.

“He can ride light which is a big advantage here.”

Legg was delighted when another of his jockeys, Anthony Allen, won the Listed Bribie Handicap on Straturbo on Saturday.

“Anthony has unlimited talent but had a slow start to the season due to injury,” he said

“But he has been riding work for some top trainers. He went to the Gold Coast and won on Jadedfox and then drove back to Brisbane for Straturbo.”
