Ron Quinton in two minds with Ljungberg

Trainer Ron Quinton will weigh up Ljungberg’s chances before deciding if he runs at Kembla Grange.

Ron Quinton is weighing up whether to run Ljungberg at Kembla Grange from a wide draw or wait another week and hope for a better barrier at Rosehill.

The four-year-old has gate 11 in Saturday’s Polytrack Handicap (1200m) and in a field reduced to 15 with the early scratching of Super Star Bob, Quinton is concerned where Ljungberg will map in the run.

“I’m just worried about that barrier draw,” Quinton said.

“From that 1200 metre start at Kembla it’s not ideal.

“I can see it being pretty ugly early going to that first turn.”

Ljungberg had a tough run from a wide gate first-up when seventh behind Sandbar over 1100 metres at Rosehill but Quinton said the horse had bounced out of it well.

A decision on whether he runs will impact TAB markets as the horse is on the third line of betting for the Kembla assignment at $7.50 with the Kim Waugh-trained Trumbull the clear-cut $3.90 favourite.

Samantha Clenton, who guided Ljungberg to his latest win in July, has been booked for the mount on Saturday with Quinton keen to utilise a claiming apprentice to offset the horse’s 60kg.

“We knew we were going to get 60 or 61 and he’s not a big horse so we had to go for the claim and she had won on him,” Quinton said.

“He’s healthy and well and in good order. “
