Red Excitement bids for another stakes win

Veteran Red Excitement (left) will attempt another stakes win in the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Doomben.

Gerald Ryan stable favourite Red Excitement will have the second and final start of an abbreviated autumn campaign when he runs in the Group Three Lord Mayor’s Cup at Doomben.

A consistent stakes performer and million-dollar earner, Red Excitement earned his first trip to Brisbane for Saturday’s 1600m race with his second to Osborne Bulls in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone on May 12.

The Godolphin-owned Osborne Bulls is now among the favourites for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap on June 9.

“His run was super,” Ryan said.

“He will run in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and then have a break.

“He will come back in the spring if he shows the same enthusiasm for racing as he has now.”

One of Red Excitement’s most memorable performances has been in defeat and it took a champion to beat him.

In the spring, the eight-year-old looked as if he might pull off one of the great upsets in racing when he led the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes field by many lengths before being run down by Winx.

Almost four years ago, Red Excitement suffered a tendon injury and was off the scene for 10 months.

He has shown no signs of any problems since but Ryan realises his racing days are coming to an end.

“He is getting towards the end of his career so he is not going to have a winter campaign,” he said.

Red Excitement will be ridden at Doomben by Kerrin McEvoy who has had one ride on him for a win at Randwick in January, 2014.
