Record numbers in quarantine for spring

Horses in England, Ireland and Japan have entered quarantine ahead of travelling to Melbourne for the spring carnival.

Three Charlie Appleby-trained Godolphin horses are already undergoing quarantine at Werribee having arrived last Saturday.

Twenty seven horses from various stables are expected in Melbourne on September 29.

Of the 27, there are 22 from England but not all will be staying at Werribee for the duration of the spring carnival with 10 heading to local trainers after completing quarantine.

English stables with horses in quarantine are Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor with Cox Plate invitee Benbatl and second topweight for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, Best Solution, while Charlie Appleby is sending out another four to join Blair House, Folkswood and Jungle Cat.

Ed Dunlop, who trained Red Cadeaux into second place in three Melbourne Cups, is returning with Red Verdon, while other trainers sending horses are Andrew Balding, Charlie Fellowes and Roger Charlton.

Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has five horses in quarantine including Cliffs Of Moher who is entered for the Cox Plate as well as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups along with Cups entry Yucatan while Fleet Review, Spirit Of Valor and Intelligence Cross are being targeted at sprint races.

Japan’s Chestnut Coat and Sole Impact round out the 27 horses.

“It’s very satisfying to again see horses from some of the world’s leading stables targeting our carnival, as well as newcomers such as Charlie Fellowes who is hoping to share in the record prize money on offer in our major races,” Racing Victoria’s Paul Bloodworth said.
