Rabbitohs vs Sharks round 6 preview

Cronulla Sharks can sure up their top four position when they clash with South Sydney Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium in NRL action on Saturday.

The Rabbitohs’ woeful start to the season, winning one of their first five matches, has been made worse by the suspension of Latrell Mitchell and the rumours swirling that coach Jason Demetriou’s tenure is in doubt.

Meanwhile, the Sharks are coming off the bye with three wins in their first four games, with their only loss coming against the Tigers where a horror run of injuries during the game derailed their chances of winning.

The Rabbitohs have named Jye Gray to make his NRL debut at fullback on Saturday night in place of the suspended Mitchell. Izaac Tu’itupou Thompson has been dropped in favour of Tyrone Munro on the wing, Peter Mamouzelos will start at hooker, Damien Cook has been dropped to the reserves and Shaquai Mitchell will return from injury (concussion) via the interchange bench.

Sharks head coach Craig Fitzgibbon has made one change to his starting line-up, welcoming back Briton Nikora to the second row from suspension with Siosifa Talakai benched. More late changes could be made to the side with Toby Rudolph (ankle) and Braden Hamlin-Uele (knee) named to return from injuries via the reserves.

South Sydney v Cronulla betting tips

The Rabbitohs’ poor run of form, injuries, and lack of discipline on the field to start the season has quickly brought them into “must-win” territory for this match against the Sharks. The visitors have been supported heavily in betting markets, shortening from $2.10 into $1.35 to win because the Rabbitohs have lost eight of their last nine matches in Sydney. The home side has also failed to cover the line in each of their last 12 matches. There is great value in a fresh Sharks outfit to win and cover the -9.5 point line with NRL bookmakers.

Sione Katoa has had a strong start to the year, scoring two tries from five line breaks, with 21 tackle breaks. The return of Nikora to the Sharks’ right edge will improve their attacking shape with Katoa being an underrated finisher. He has scored at least one try in each of his four previous appearances against the Rabbitohs. There is great value in the $2.10 odds for Katoa to score a try at any time in the match.

Braydon Trindall has give the Sharks’ attack a new look at five-eighth as a more dominant ball player with a stronger running game than his predecessor. He scored a try in his last match against the Raiders from a line break and already has several tackle breaks this season. Trindall has scored a try in three of the Sharks’ last four matches as favourites and is great value to cross the try line again against the Rabbitohs ($3.35).
