Rabbitohs target Mal Meninga as coach amid season struggles

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are considering Mal Meninga as their coach at Heffron Park when current coach Jason Demetriou leaves.
Reports suggest that Meninga is a choice among six candidates, backed by the Rabbitohs board.
The plan is to part ways with Demetriou after their round six match against Cronulla on Saturday night and quickly start talks with Meninga, who would step in as a coach.
The team sees this move as a chance for Meninga to have an impact in the upcoming matches against the Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers.
Known for his coaching success with the State of Origin Queensland Maroons and Australia squad, Meninga’s impressive track record speaks volumes about his coaching prowess.
The Rabbitohs believe that Meninga’s leadership qualities and ability to manage players make him the perfect choice to tackle their poor start to the NRL season.
They have struggled at the bottom of the NRL standings with a 1–4 record, scoring 72 points while conceding 162.
Meninga’s strong connection with South Sydney stars like Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighton, Cameron Murray, and Campbell Graham, who were part of the Australian Kangaroos squad under his guidance during the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, further supports his suitability for the position.
If the Rabbitohs manage to bring Meninga on board with a short-term contract, they are likely to focus on securing Wayne Bennett’s commitment for the 2025 season and, beyond.
