Qld Oaks heroine returns to Winning Ways
Queensland Oaks heroine Winning Ways has earned an interstate trip after winning at Eagle Farm.
Winning Ways is poised to make a hit-and-run assault on the Sydney spring carnival after her courageous win in the Lexus Spring Cup at Eagle Farm.
Trainer Garry Newham said Winning Ways ($4.40) will have her next run in the City Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m) at Randwick on October 26.
“I want to take her to Sydney for the Tatt’s Cup then bring her back up here for the Shoot Out Quality in December,” Newham said.
“If she wins the Shoot Out that will give her a wildcard into the Magic Millions staying race in January.”
Newham praised the mare’s toughness to fight off a determined challenge from runner-up Alward ($12) to win by three-quarters of a length in the 2225m race.
“I knew when the runner-up came at her she would lift because she will not let another horse get past her,” he said.
The mare won this year’s Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben but Newham was forced to spell her after she suffered a bleeding attack following the race and was banned from racing for three months.
A last-to-first win by Profit may have earned him and extended campaign and an interstate trip.
Trainer Chris Anderson will consult with part-owner Duncan Ramage on plans for Profit who made it three wins and a close second from four starts when he won the Melbourne Cup Day @ Eagle Farm Handicap (1800m).
“There’s a couple of races coming up that we’ve spoken about but we’ll just see how he pulls up. It’s the old saying we’ll let the dust settle and enjoy today,” Anderson said.
“I’ll speak to Duncan in the next few days and make a decision on what we do with him.”
One option that may be considered by Anderson for Profit is dropping back to a mile in the $1 million Bondi Stakes for three-year-olds at Randwick on October 26.
“Whether or not we bring him back for the summer carnival, or take him to Sydney in the next weeks remains to be seen,” Anderson said.
“He’s certainly a winter carnival horse in the future as well.”
