EURO 2024 preview: Portugal v France

Portugal have the daunting task of stopping France on Saturday (AEST) in Hamburg in their EURO 2024 quarter-final match.

The Selecao progressed to the last eight of the competition after beating Slovenia 3-0 in post-match penalties.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the hero of the penalty shootout as he saved all three Slovenian penalties, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva converting their spot-kicks to secure Portugal’s victory.

Meanwhile, France made it to the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win over Belgium in the round of 16.

The only goal of the match came in the 85th minute, when Jan Vertonghen deflected the ball past his goalkeeper to secure France’s win.

Whereas Portugal’s performances haven’t met expectations, France have been even more disappointing.

Finalists in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Les Bleus are yet to score from open play in their first four games, with their only goals coming from a Kylian Mbappe penalty and two own goals.

The winner of this bout will have the unenviable task of facing either Spain or Germany in the semi-finals.

Portugal v France team news

Although Portugal don’t have injury concerns, Roberto Martinez will have to monitor his side keenly, considering his players endured more than 120 minutes in their last-16 match against Slovenia. Of concern will be whether 41-year-old Pepe, who struggled in the latter stages of the match, will be fit enough to handle Mbappe’s pace.

Mbappe, though injured, will play for France while wearing a mask. Adrien Rabiot will miss the encounter after picking a second booking against Belgium, with the midfielder likely replaced by Eduardo Camavinga.

Portugal v France quarter-final predictions

This fixture has yielded fewer than three goals in three of the last four meetings. Given how neither Portugal nor France have been convincing so far in the tournament, soccer betting sites are offering fair odds of -166.67 for the match to have under 2.5 goals.

Although France appear to have a stronger squad, Portugal seem to want it more — if not for anything else, then for Ronaldo as he approaches retirement. Expect 2016 champions to go for the win at all costs, with Marantelli Bet paying -166.67 for them to qualify.
