Port Adelaide prevail in injury-hit battle against St Kilda
Port Adelaide emerged victorious with a hard-fought 10-point win over St Kilda at Adelaide Oval despite facing injuries that impacted the game.
This win pushes Port Adelaide back into the top eight while dealing a blow to St Kilda’s chances of making it to the AFL finals.
Charlie Dixon led the charge for the $1.36 online bookmaker favourites by scoring four goals, including the one in the final quarter.
Ollie Wines, a Brownlow Medalist, also made an impact with 22 disposals, nine tackles and an important goal.
Willem Drew, a midfielder, was recognised as the best player on the field for his relentless performance.
Gathering 23 disposals, seven marks, and eight tackles.
Jonathan Brown from Fox Footy praised Drew’s efforts.
Labeling him as the team’s most dependable player who always delivers.
The game started positively for the St Kilda Saints when Mitch Owens scored the opening goal after earning a kick.
However, Port Adelaide gained momentum gradually with contributions from Dixon and Connor Rozee.
Although Brad Hill and Matteas Phillipou scored for St Kilda to keep them in contention, Port Adelaide Powers held the lead at quarter-time.
The second quarter witnessed an exchange of goals as both teams found success on the attack.
Dixon kept up his performance by scoring two goals.
Unfortunately, the Power faced a setback when Allir Allir had to leave the game due, to a concussion from a tackle by Jack Higgins.
The injury list grew longer as Sam Powell Pepper also had to exit the field with a knee issue, adding to Port Adelaide’s challenges.
In the third quarter of the game, the Saints made a comeback, scoring three consecutive goals to narrow the gap.
Despite this, Port Adelaide regained control, with Dixon scoring his fourth goal and Wines securing the win with a goal.
Despite St. Kilda’s push, Port Adelaide managed to hold on for a hard-earned victory.
After the match, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley expressed relief at winning but expressed concern for his injured players.
“We’re happy with how things turned out, but we’re keeping an eye on our players injuries,” Hinkley shared.
“We’ll assess their condition and hope for news.”
On the other side, St Kilda coach Brett Ratten rued missed chances and costly mistakes made by his team.
“We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalise on,” Ratten reflected.
“We’ll aim to bounce stronger in our next game.”
Port Adelaide is rejoicing over their comeback to the eight, while St Kilda needs to regroup and tackle their injury issues to maintain their hopes of reaching the finals.
