Port Adelaide crush Richmond in Boak’s record-breaking game
Port Adelaide have bounced back in emphatic fashion, dismantling a lacklustre Richmond outfit by 72 points at Adelaide Oval on Saturday evening.
Celebrating Travis Boak’s record-breaking 393rd AFL appearance in Port colours — surpassing the legendary Russell Ebert — the Power dominated from start to finish, storming to a 21.14 (140) to 9.14 (68) victory.
After a disappointing round one showing against Collingwood,
Sam Powell-Pepper was another standout. The hard-nosed forward, who missed most of 2024 with a knee injury, was back to his bullocking best. He lit up the second quarter with a stunning goal from the boundary, drawing a roar from the Adelaide Oval faithful and reminding everyone just how important he is to Port’s engine room. The Power’s intensity and polish around the ground left Richmond scrambling for answers. Any hopes of replicating their brief round one fightback against Carlton were extinguished early, as Port’s midfield and forward line ran rampant. Richmond showed some signs of life in the second half, particularly through young key forward Harry Armstrong, who kicked two final-term goals in a promising display. But it was a rare highlight in an otherwise one-sided contest that exposed the Tigers’ lack of midfield control and experience. While the Tigers will look to regroup and focus on the development of their next generation, Port Adelaide will be buoyed by the response after a poor opening round. With their midfield humming, pressure back on point, and stars like Boak and Powell-Pepper leading the charge, the Power reminded the competition just how dangerous they can be when switched on.
