Paris 2024: Matt Wearn defends Olympic gold in Men’s Dinghy
Matt Wearn has secured Australia’s fourth consecutive gold medal in sailing, marking a remarkable achievement amidst a tumultuous day of racing on the Bay of Marseille at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Wearn won the ILCA 7 medal race despite a general recall, numerous restarts, and a shortened course due to unpredictably bad weather.
After the initial race was abandoned moments before the gold could be decided, Wearn engaged in a fierce tacking battle with his main competitor, Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus.
Despite visible frustration, Wearn maintained his composure as officials sought better wind conditions for a restart.
Less than an hour later, a new race began, where Wearn strategically covered Kontides, ultimately clinching the gold.
This win not only marks Wearn’s success after a challenging battle with long Covid but also places him among elite company, joining the ranks of two-time Olympic sailing gold medalists like Mat Belcher and Mal Page.
Wearn’s journey to gold was characterised by patience and resilience, overcoming setbacks including delayed races and unpredictable winds throughout the competition.
His dominance throughout the nine-race regatta and his ability to secure victory under pressure highlight his status as Australia’s premier Olympic sailor.
Looking ahead, Wearn now eyes the possibility of further Olympic glory in Los Angeles, aiming to cement his legacy as one of Australia’s greatest sailors with a potential third medal in four years.
