O’Malley races to satisfying win at Valley

Having been nursed back from a career-threatening injury, promising sprinter O’Malley has provided connections with a satisfying win at Moonee Valley.

After spending 80 weeks on the sidelines recovering from a knee fracture, O’Malley made his race return in August and landed his first win since his comeback in his third start of the campaign on Saturday.

With Craig Newitt aboard, O’Malley ($4.60) sat back in the City Jeep Handicap (955m) before rounding his rivals to beat Jungle Edge by half a length with 1-1/2 lengths to Gun Case third.

Trainer Enver Jusufovic said it had been a great team effort getting the gelding back.

“I always had the opinion that he was a Group horse, and it’s just great to have him back and win a race,” the trainer said.

“He’s a special horse. After suffering a fracture and two screws in his knee, I think it’s a great story.

“It’s been a long rehab back and certainly if he wasn’t one hundred per cent we wouldn’t have ventured down this track. But he’s just such a tough horse.”

Newitt said he was confident a long way out on Saturday.

” The amount of problems this horse had had through his career he shouldn’t be racing, but he has persisted and he’s obviously got high class,” Newitt said.
