Oliver expected to appeal suspension

Damien Oliver is expected to appeal a reckless riding suspension which will keep him out of three key spring carnival meetings.

As it stands, the 20-meeting suspension for his winning ride on Flying Artie in Wednesday’s Blue Sapphire Stakes, means he will miss the ride on French horse Vadamos in the Cox Plate on October 22 and English in the Manikato Stakes the night before.

He would also be expected to have a full book for the Derby day meeting on October 29.

Oliver refused to plead guilty to reckless riding saying he had never faced such a charge in his his 30-year career.

Stewards said Oliver came from behind eventual runner-up Dalradian at the 700m mark and made heavy contact with Ken’s Dream, causing that horse to be hampered and his jockey Dean Yendall to become unbalanced.
