The final match for round two on the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership is between the Brisbane Broncos and Canterbury Bulldogs. One of these teams will begin their season with two wins from two games, something that not many at all would have predicted.

The Bulldogs managed to scrap their way to a win over the Cowboys in round one, being only a couple of meters away from a Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow try, and subsequent loss. Alternatively for the Broncos, they showed glimpses of a club that had been made famous for scrapping out a hard-fought win. Of 44 matches, the Broncos have won 25, including their last two matches by a total of 44 points. The one question on a lot of fans and experts minds alike is, what will Adam Reynolds do for this Brisbane Broncos side?

The Bulldogs round one match against the Cowboys was a hard-fought battle in the middle, and while they only had 46% possession, the Bulldogs completed 76% of their sets en route to their two point win. The Bulldogs did have to compensate for Jack Hetherington being sent to the sideline for 10 minutes, and with one less error than the Cowboys 12, were largely disciplined around the ruck and in their defensive line. Matt Burton had a solid debut for his new club as he kicked for over 500m in the match to keep the Bulldogs relatively out of trouble.

The Bulldogs recruited strong in the offseason and the results have started to show as everyone in the backline broke at least one tackle, with Matt Dufty and Josh Addo-Carr trotting through 3 tackles each. Dufty and Addo-Carr also had a line break each, but the Bulldogs will need to build on their offensive weapons as the season progresses, with some favouring the Cowboys for the wooden spoon.

In their season debut against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the Broncos showed a defensive resolve that was lacking for much of the previous season. Couple this with a more settled and targeted attacking game, and the impacts of Adam Reynolds can be seen before he’s even taken the field. It was not his leadership on the field, but Payne Haas and ‘Bash Brother’ Pat Carrigan who combined for 377 run meters together that led the Broncos last Friday night. This created time and space for not only Albert Kelly and Billy Walters, but outside backs Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo to break tackles and the Bunnies defensive line.

Brisbane was by no means perfect in round one, as many opportunities went begging, which goes to show the scope for improvement this football team has. It’s easy to envisage the addition of Adam Reynolds to this starting 13, along with the addition of Kobe Hetherington to a reshuffled Broncos bench, will make a huge improvement to this team from the perspective of game management and experience. This is where the Bulldogs will find themselves out of their depth with Brisbane, because as talented Matt Burton and Jake Averillo may be, they aren’t exactly in the league of Adam Reynolds.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos betting tips

Expect the Brisbane Broncos to go 2/2 to start their season with a win over the Canterbury Bulldogs. With a more talented and disciplined forward pack in front of Adam Reynolds, the Broncos should win the battle of the middle third and expect to see a more organised and potent attacking game off the back of the platform set by the forwards. In Brisbane’s win, Selwyn Cobbo and Kotoni Staggs should both score a try each to continue their strong start to the season.
