The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Parramatta Eels will write the latest chapter in one of the NRL’s most storied rivalries when they meet on the Queen’s Birthday Monday public holiday.
The Canterbury Bulldogs still just have the two wins this season while the Eels will be fresh off a bye that sees them comfortably in the top eight.
Canterbury remain winless under caretaker coach Michael Potter but they’ve been a lot more competitive since he has come in. Their defence still has a lot of improving to do, but their attack under him has seen a big up tick. They have averaged 21 per game in those three games and just 9.6 per game in the 10 games played under Trent Barrett this season. There has been more imagination in their attacking structures and they’re willing to try early kicks, which was successful against Penrith for two tries.
They’ve decided to stick with Jake Averillo at fullback and moved Corey Allan to the centres, while the forward pack remains unchanged from their loss to the Panthers.
The top bookies are giving them a +15.5 head start in the handicap market and they’ve covered that margin in each of the last three weeks under Potter, so perhaps there is some value there when looking at putting some cash down on them.
Josh Addo-Carr will be chomping at the bit to keep his name in the thoughts of New South Wales’ selectors, so make sure you get him at $2.55 in the anytime try scoring market with ladbrokes.
Parramatta Eels had a terrific win down in Canberra before they had their bye and it snapped a run of two months where they followed wins with losses.
A game like this presents a fantastic opportunity fresh off the bye to keep themselves well in the race of the top four, so there is a different kind of pressure despite the weaker opposition.
The big issue of their season so far this year has been the consistency factor with their defence, so if they are able to bed down some good habits in this game it could set them up for the remainder of the season.
They are a skinny $1.16 in the head-to-head market and a fan favourite will make his return this week.
Winger Maika Sivo will have the Blue and Gold Army chanting his name as he takes his place back on the left-wing after rupturing his ACL in 2021.
He is just $1.65 to score at any time during the game, so take the $7 odds for him to score the first try. Footy fans love a redemption story and you can guarantee the Eels’ fans will be loading up on that market.
The 13 plus is the most likely outcome at just $1.72 but rivalry games have a funny way of producing the best out of teams no matter where they sit on the ladder, so perhaps the $3.15 for a 1-12 point win is the way to go.
Key Match Up: Matt Burton vs Dylan Brown
The two men wearing the six jersery for their team hold the key. Both Matt Burton and Dylan Brown have terrific running games and if both are at their best it will be fantastic to watch. Brown has the advantage of having a classy halfback inside him, so the pressure on Burton to drag Canterbury with him could force him to try more trick plays with Addo-Carr. Regardless of the outcome from those Hail Mary plays, they are fun to watch as a fan.
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels betting predictions
The Bulldogs will cover the spread for the fourth week in a row and both the wingers mentioned will score. Parramatta will be slow out of the blocks due to the bye but will do enough to win.
