NRL 2023 SuperCoach Round 3 preview & top trades
With round two of the 2023 NRL premiership in the books Supercoaches look forward to round three with price changes set to come into effect, building the team value for squad depth. Supercoaches will also be navigating the treacherous scenario that is building up their squad for the weeks to come while trying to avoid ‘chasing points’.
In round two, six players recorded scores of over 100 points across five different positions. With the exception of J’maine Hopgood, for his low price tag and enormous upside for player value and point scoring potential, it’s imperative that Supercoaches do not ‘chase points’ by trading for players like Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, William Kennedy and Dylan Brown. A combination of poor team performances, difficult upcoming draws and bye rounds make trades for these players poor options.
Looking forward to round three, there are some players that could be ‘must haves’ for coaches in the rounds coming.
REECE WALSH – Brisbane Broncos (FLB)
Reece Walsh made his Brisbane Broncos debut a memorable one chalking up a try to go with three line break assists, three tackle breaks, one try assist and one offload against a Cowboys team that started the game incredibly well coming off a win against the Raiders. Walsh will play six of his next eight games at home, leaving South-East Queensland once, with four of those eight teams sitting at eighth or lower on the ladder. The Broncos have shown in a small sample size they are the real deal, in favour partly to Walsh and his spark from fullback, and he could be in for many more 100+ point games.
BEN HUNT – St George Illawarra Dragons (HFB)
Ben Hunt could be a target in the halves for Supercoaches after the Dragons beginning their season with a dominant win over the Titans. Hunt will face his former club, the Brisbane Broncos, in round three; however, an average of just over 74PPG in his career against his former club can give merit to the trade. Hunt will face the Sharks, Dolphins, Titans and Raiders in the weeks following where he is the catalyst for everything positive the St George Illawarra Dragons accomplish and should hold a very high average score.
CAMPBELL GRAHAM – South Sydney Rabbitohs (CTW)
Although he did not score particularly well against the Panthers in Penrith, Graham scored 110 against the Sharks in Cronulla with solid base stats. Graham will take on the Sydney Roosters this weekend in the local derby before matches against the Sea Eagles, Storm, Bulldogs and Dolphins. Graham will also be the beneficiary of what is an improving South Sydney Rabbitohs right edge attack with halfback Lachlan Ilias improving in the side. Graham looks unlikely to be a part of the New South Wales State of Origin side and has an extended playing stretch before his next bye.
TOHU HARRIS – New Zealand Warriors (2RF / FRF)
Tohu Harris has made a strong start to the season for the New Zealand Warriors in the lock position. The Warriors have struggled with depth in the middle as a result of injuries which has seen Harris play the full eighty minutes in both games this season. The Warriors forward pack appears to be back to full strength and look set to rotate Tom Ale and Josh Curran through the middle with Addin Fonua-Blake and Bunty Afoa. Harris should see no drop in playing minutes with incredible base stats. Supercoaches will need to pay up for Harris, but the price will be worth it in the long run to build big overall scores.
WAYDE EGAN – New Zealand Warriors (HOK)
Wayde Egan could be a target for Supercoaches at the hooker position going forward for multiple reasons. Similarly, to Harris, Egan has solid base stats, but an enormous climb in attacking stats makes him an incredibly appealing selection. Egan would be a solid choice to trade for in place of Brandon Smith who is already battling injuries in a Roosters side that is yet to click fully in attack. Playing roughly 60 minutes or more in the middle for the Warriors gives him plenty of opportunity to score well in the middle of a big, mobile forward pack. Egan also looks set to increase sharply in value which could make him the perfect short-term option towards a bigger trade down the track.
