Newcastle United climb top four with Wolves thrashing | EPL news

Newcastle United news

Alexander Isak scored twice and provided an assist as Newcastle United climbed into the English Premier League top four following their thrilling 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night at St James’ Park.

Although the two sides were evenly matched during the opening exchanges, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through the fiery Isak.

After receiving the ball from a give-and-go with teammate Anthony Gordon, the Swedish international saw his strike deflected past Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa for the lead.

The strike extended Isak’s goalscoring streak to eight consecutive games, setting a new club record and becoming only the fourth player in Premier League history to achieve the feat after Ruud van Nistelrooy, Daniel Sturridge, and Jamie Vardy.

Isak added his second of the night before the hour mark when Bruno Guimaraes’s clever ball found the unmarked Swede inside the box, allowing him the simplest of strikes from the penalty area.

Gordon got on the finishing end of a breathing counter-attack 16 minutes from stoppage time, wrapping up an impressive performance by Eddie Howe’s side.

A sixth consecutive victory elevates the Magpies to fourth on the Premier League ladder with 38 points, further strengthening their chances of booking a Champions League place.
The Newcastle manager was full of praise for his side, who overcame Wolves’ deep defensive line.

“Very pleased,” said Howe.

“I thought we had to keep going today.

“I thought Wolves played well. It’s always difficult against a back five when they defend as deep as they did in that first half to break them down, so we had to be patient today.

“I think it was a case of just waiting and controlling transitions. First half they had a couple of moments that were warning signs for us but overall I thought we handled the game really well.”

Meanwhile, Wolves remain in the danger zone after back-to-back defeats in the EPL.

Speaking after the game, head coach Vitor Pereira insisted the result wasn’t a true reflection of the game.

“The result didn’t show what happened in the game,” said Pereira.

“I am so proud of the players – we created many chances. We will get confidence and begin to score.

“We tried to do everything well so I can’t criticise the defenders.”

Wolves travel to London to face Chelsea on Monday, with online bookmakers listing them as +641 outsiders to defeat the Blues (-270.27).

Meanwhile, Newcastle United will host Bournemouth this Saturday, with leading soccer bookies paying -153.85 for the Magpies to beat the Cherries (+403).
