The Newcastle Jets are set to welcome Perth Glory to McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night in Matchweek 24 of the 2020/21 A-League season.

The Jets are coming off a 2-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners on June 1, which was just their fourth victory of the season. A win this weekend could see Newcastle avoid the dreaded wooden spoon, but any other result would doom them to last place.

Perth are coming off a narrow 2-1 defeat to the Brisbane Roar on Wednesday night and can only build on their late consolation goal in the 85th minute which made things interesting. With the likes of Andy Keogh, Bruno Fornaroli and Diego Castro in attack, the Glory will prove hard to beat come Saturday despite a below-average season.

Online bookmakers have the home side as $2.95 outsiders to claim just their fifth win of the season, with Perth Glory $2.30 favourites despite playing their second game in the space of four days. The draw is paying $3.50.

Result: Draw

When these two sides last met it was a 1-1 draw at Coffs Harbour with two second-half goals cancelling one another out. Perth are coming off a mid-week loss to the Roar, whereas the Jets caused an upset when defeating Central Coast 24 hours earlier. However, these two sides tend to play tight contests whenever they meet, and the $3.50 for the draw looks to be the smart play.

Total goals: Under 2.5

Perth have not kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight matches, but with Newcastle hardly being a high-scoring side, we expect Saturday night’s contest to be a dour affair. Despite boasting the attacking trio of Keogh, Fornaroli and Castro, Perth have struggled to give them quality supply throughout the season. Three of the last six matches between these two sides have gone under 2.5 goals, so we are happy to go that way with $2.10 on offer.

Correct Score: 1-1

The April 13 clash at Coffs Harbour ended up being the second 1-1 draw between these sides in their past five meetings. Both teams have struggled to hit the back of the net consistently this campaign. Although Newcastle will be desperate to avoid the wooden spoon, we cannot see them doing any better than a 1-1 stalemate in their final game of the season.
