Round two of the 22/23 NBL season continues with two of the competition heavyweights coming head to head at John Cain Arena in Melbourne. Melbourne United will be looking to continue their strong start to the season having beaten the New Zealand Breakers, who have subsequently gone on to beat the JackJumpers. The Sydney Kings will be looking for much of the same having recorded wins over the Hawks and Bullets.

The battle between these two sides has been very balanced in recent history with a 50% split for wins between the two sides. Further to this, 8 of the last 10 winners between these two clubs have been favourites going into the match.

While Kings go into this match as favourites, and the United have only played one game in beating the Breakers, that form looks stronger than the sides the Kings have beaten. Should United go on to record a win over the Kings, it would be expected that win is by a narrow margin, making the United 1-10 point win great value at $3.40.

Chris Goulding lit up the Breakers in his season debut when he made six 3 pointers en route to a 24 point game. As captain of the United, he will be a key factor in the United’s victory should they go on to record one. Similarly for the Kings, it’s their guard Derrick Walton Jr who shoot an incredibly efficient 9/12 from the field against Brisbane to lead the Kings. Should these two engage in an offensive battle, the match will surely go above the 177.5 points for the match at $1.85.

The Kings showed in the final quarter against the Bullets how much of a problem they will be in the NBL offensively this season. Led by start guard Walton Jr, the Kings poured in 33 points to take down the Bullets. Look for the Kings to try and replicate this performance against the United and record the highest scoring quarter of the match again paying $1.70.

KEY MATCH UP: CHRIS GOULDING v DERRICK WALTON JR

Despite being so early in the season, this could be one of the best match ups in the NBL. Goulding is one of the most dynamic perimeter shooters in Australia on his day, and Walton Jr has already shown the NBL how proficient a distributor and scorer he can be. Walton Jr will surely be the man with defending Goulding on the perimeter, and should Walton Jr limit Goulding’s opportunities in clear space, Walton Jr will translate defence into offense and make life for United difficult. This match up will certainly go a long way to deciding the winner of the match.
