Mumbai Indians lose again as Gujarat dominate
Gujarat Titans handed Mumbai Indians their second-straight loss in the 2025 Indian Premier League, beating the pre-season favourites by 36 runs in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
GT started strongly with the bat before fading late in their innings but still managed 8/196 batting first.
This proved far too much for MI to chase down, as the host’s economical bowling and regular wickets restricted Mumbai to 6/160 from their 20 overs.
The loss lengthens Mumbai’s odds of winning their sixth title in 2025 to $9 at BetOnline, after top online bookmakers had them priced at $5 pre-season.
Sai Sudharsan was key for Gujarat in setting their total, with the opener crushing 63 from 41, combining for 78 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill (38 from 27).
He had good company from England’s Jos Buttler (39 from 24) as well, taking GT through to 2/179 before getting out in the 18th over.
Titans will be eager to improve their death overs, however, with six wickets and just 17 runs coming from the final 13 balls.
They bowled excellently though, striking early to reduce Mumbai to 2/35 in the fifth over.
While the visitors rebuilt well to 2/97 as Tilak Varma (39 from 36) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 from 28) combined, that was as good as it got for MI.
After Varma and Suryakumar fell, the rest of the lineup struggled, with Robin Minz (3 from 6) falling early and Hardik Pandya (11 from 17), Naman Dhir (18* from 11) and Mitchell Santner (18* from 9) failing to stay ahead of the asking rate.
This was largely due to the wiles of pacer Prasidh Krishna, who took 2/18 from four overs to claim his first Man of the Match award.
“Cutters into the wicket were doing well, and the plan was to make sure I used those lengths,” he explained afterwards.
“I just figured that was working, so I did not want to test the speed gun.
“Wanted to keep things simple; every single ball was important.”
Despite the loss, MI still remains ahead of GT in outright betting across cricket bookmakers, with Gujarat returning $10 – the sixth line of betting – to win the title in 2025.
