Muhammad Mokaev released by UFC after UFC 304 win
Muhammad Mokaev’s time in the UFC has reached its conclusion following his win at UFC 304 against ranked #8 Manel Kape.
The 23-year-old rising star was a -148 bookmaker favourite heading into his final fight on his contract and had expressed optimism for a new contract to be signed.
However, Dana White, the CEO of the UFC, confirmed that Mokaev will not be receiving a contract at the UFC 304 post-fight conference.
White pointed out that Mokaev’s grappling-focused style was not a big contributing factor in the decision; however, it did not help his situation.
“We’ve been doing this for a long f*cking time. I’m sure one of the matchmakers probably said something to him or whatever.”
The matchmakers aren’t big fans of his for many different reasons.”
There’s a lot of people who shoot takedowns in this business, and a lot of guys that fight with that type of style. But it’s a lot more than just that.”
“He’s not under contract anymore. I think the PFL’s going to get a great undefeated guy. Good luck to him.”
In addition, White hinted at incidents outside the octagon involving Mokaev, including altercations with opponent Manel Kape.
Despite maintaining an undefeated 13-fight win record in professional mixed martial arts, Mokaev’s limited appeal to fans and off-the-cage troubles ultimately led to his departure.
Mokaev exiting the UFC as a ranked fighter signifies a defining message to all fighters on the UFC roster.
While his grappling prowess and aggressive approach earned him a 7-0 record, his behaviour outside of competition and lack of fan connection ultimately played a role in his exit.
