More ref rage (and some praise) in top Tweets of NRL Round 9
THE Panthers were pantsed, the Bunnies were boiled and the Storm reaffirmed their 2017 Premiership credentials.
But it was all about the referees again in round nine as punters and pundits alike voiced their wrath at the quality of the officiating.
Here are the best bits from Twitter.
More pain for Panthers
The clock is ticking for Anthony Griffen after Penrith copped their seventh defeat of the season on Thursday night.

The loss at Brisbane leaves the Panthers second from bottom, a mere two points above Newcastle Knights in the slog for the wooden spoon.
What is seriously going on at @PenrithPanthers….. if they were a racehorse there’d be a stewards enquiry. @TK_BSB #NRLBroncosPanthers

The Broncos copped their fair share from the Twitterverse, however, after yet another controversial video review went in their favour.

Bunnies blitzed, Cowboys wrangled
Manly put on the performance of the week, smashing South Sydney to the tune of 46-8 on Friday night at the Allianz.

It would be fair to say the ‘neutrals’ on Twitter weren’t shedding too many tears over the Rabbitohs and their plight.

There was plenty of rancour over this off-the-ball hit on Daly Cherry-Evans, for which Sam Burgess somehow got off scot-free:

Meanwhile, up in Townsville, Parramatta put another dint in North Queensland’s title chances with an impressive 26-6 victory.
But the show was stolen by Kenny Edwards, who was not exactly delighted at being sin-binned for a slap on Gavin Cooper.

Titans crush Knights, Dogs upset Raiders and Sharks keep on swimming
NRL Saturday went right to script for Gold Coast, who ran out convincing winners over Newcastle thanks to a brace each from Jarryd Hayne and Konrad Hurrell.

With the Knights well on track for another wooden spoon, some are beginning to question why there isn’t more pressure on coach Nathan Brown.
Taylor sacked. Hasler almost sacked. Madge & Griffin under pressure. But Nathan Brown 2 wins from 32 games= good bloke??? #NRLTitansKnights
— NRL CONSPIRACIES (@NrlConspiracies) 28 April 2017
Des Hasler’s Bulldogs saluted in fine fashion this weekend despite an injury to Josh Reynolds, downing the Raiders 16-10 and kicking them out of the eight in the process.
Sadly, another poor display from the match officials stole focus from what was a gutsy Canterbury comeback.
After watching the #NRLBulldogsRaiders game again…my God we played so well! Refs were pathetic, players injured & the boys stepped up! ??

Don’t let the win disguise the fact that Henry Perenara was absolutely horrendous tonight @Todd_Greenberg #NRLBulldogsRaiders

Henry Perenara is the worst referee in the NRL by far. He will be sacked next week. #NRLBulldogsRaiders

The refs also came in for a pounding over at Leichhardt Oval after Paul Gallen hoodwinked the video judges in Cronulla’s 22-16 win over Wests Tigers.

Some of the best action took place up in the stands, where Tigers supporters were making no attempts to mask their displeasure at certain members of the playing group.

Warriors win a tight one, Storm slay Dragons in tussle for top
It was a very enjoyable NRL Sunday for New Zealand Warriors, who edged out Sydney Roosters by a single point in a war of attrition in Auckland.
Wasn’t pretty but Warriors dug in defensively against a Roosters side who had enough chances to win two games #NRLWarriorsRoosters
— David Skipwith (@dskipwithNZH) 30 April 2017
Again the refs stole the headlines, but this time there was plenty of praise for Ashley Klein’s controversial and decisive offside call against Mitchell Pearce.
We bag refs often, but that was a great call from Ashley Klein & his fellow officials for the @NZWarriors penalty goal. #NRLWarriorsRoosters
— Andrew Voss (@AndrewVossy) 30 April 2017
“It was a genuine penalty, he needed to get back onside and he didn’t.” Trent Robinson.
Fair play. #NRLWarriorsRoosters #NRL
— Andrew Bryan (@AndrewBryan321) 30 April 2017
That’s a really good call from Ashley Klein – a lot of referees would ignore that Pearce offside #NRLWarriorsRoosters #letsgonewarriors
— Chris Garry (@ChrisGarry7) 30 April 2017
The highlight of the round was the table-top tussle between Melbourne and St George-Illawarra, but at half-time you would not have thought these two were even in the same division.

Dragons fought back after the break to keep the scoreline respectable, but it was all about the Storm as Billy Slater broke his try drought and Cameron Smith became the greatest goalscorer in NRL history.

Yet a few St George fans could not resist the urge to have a pop at the refs – a common theme throughout round nine, if you hadn’t noticed by now.
