Arch-rivals the Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United are set to clash in Matchweek 9 of the 2021/22 A-League Men season in what is arguably the marquee matchup of the weekend.
Sitting atop the A-League Men’s table are the Victory who will be looking to continue their strong recent form in all competitions. Having won four of their last five matches in all competitions, the Victory will be hopeful of continuing their efforts again Adelaide. Having just gotten the better of United in a midweek clash in the FFA Cup, the Victory should have all the confidence in the world heading into Saturday’s clash.
Off season signing Francesco Margiotta has found his groove in Melbourne, with the Italian netting in two of his past three matches in the A-League and alongside Nicholas D’Agostino and Jake Brimmer will give this United defence plenty to think about. Despite winning just one of the last four clashes between these sides, it could be the form and confidence the Victory are playing with that could prove the difference on Saturday night.

With just one win from their first six matches in the A-League this season, Adelaide will be heading to Melbourne wanting to claim all three points. Having lost to the Victory twice already this season, Adelaide will be needing a big performance from the likes of Craig Goodwin and Stefan Mauk who will be needing to rely on every bit of their experience to lift their side across the line.
In their last match in the A-League, United managed to put four goals past the Wellington Phoenix in a match where Craig Goodwin found the back of the net twice from the penalty spot and picked up an assist along the way. They’ll be needing a similar output from George Blackwood in attack who also found the back of the net against Wellington, whilst Spanish midfielder Isaias will be needing to be at his crafty best.
Online bookmakers have the Melbourne Victory as $2.05 favourites to build on their lead atop of the A-League Men table, whilst Adelaide are deemed $3.10 outsiders to pick up a second win in the competition.
Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United betting tips
Melbourne Victory to win 2-1
When these two sides met earlier in the year in the A-League, the Victory were 2-1 winners at Hindmarsh Stadium and they have since backed it up with another 2-1 win at the same ground during the week in the FFA Cup. They now get to face the under fire Adelaide United at their ground, AAMI Park and look a good bet to make it a hat trick of 2-1 wins over their arch rivals if statistics is anything to go by.
Melbourne Victory 2-1
Anytime Goalscorer: Francesco Margiotta
As we mentioned earlier, the Italian striker Francesco Margiotta has seemingly found his groove in the A-League, netting two goals in his last three games. He converted a penalty mid-week in the FFA Cup against Adelaide replicating what he had done earlier in the season when these two clashed in the A-League. It is safe to say that if the Victory are to earn a penalty, then Margiotta will take it, but in open play he is just as a dangerous.
Anytime Goalscorer: Francesco Margiotta
