Margaret River Pro: Collapinto, Florence secure quarterfinals
The Margaret River Pro in Western Australia, which is stop #5 on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) had an impactful day of competition, although it was cut short due to tough conditions.
The Men’s Round of 16 featured performances, surprising upsets, and emotional moments.
One of the highlights was the showdown between surfing champions John John Florence from Hawaii and Gabriel Medina from Brazil.
Florence emerged victorious after a thrilling battle, overcoming the lead to Medina by securing a 7.00 and a 6.90 score in the final two minutes.
The ongoing rivalry between these two surfers continues to enthrall fans around the world.
Meanwhile, World No. 1 Griffin Colapinto from the USA showcased his skill by defeating Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam in Heat 3.
Colapinto impressed with a 12.07 combined score from two waves, leaving Boukhiam needing a backup wave to catch up.
Despite Boukhiam’s loss in the round of 16, his earlier qualification for the end half of the 2024 CT marks a massive milestone in his career.
Wildcard competitor George Pittar, from Australia, continued his performance by defeating Liam O’Brien in Heat 4 with scores.
Pittar’s strong showing is making him a serious contender in the competition as he gears up to take on Colapinto in the Quarterfinals, setting the stage for a showdown.
In an emotional matchup, Brazilian brothers Samuel and Miguel Pupo went head-to-head in a high-pressure contest.
Samuel strategically dominated the waves, ultimately outperforming his brother to keep his Championship Tour alive, while Miguel Pupo will unfortunately be sent back to the Challenger Series.
The heat ended with tears flowing, highlighting the bond between the siblings amidst their rivalry.
As the competition progresses, pivotal Mid-Season Cut scenarios will unfold in Heats 5 and 6. The leading WSL bookmakers currently offering $3.20 for Seth Moniz to defeat Ethan Ewing and keep his CT dreams alive, and Caio Ibelli a $2.70 chance of defeating South African Jordy Smith.
