Maher-Eustace get Doomben feature double

Jockey Luke Currie bounced back from a fall to steer Away Game to victory in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes.

Away Game ($2.10) gave the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace training partnership a feature double for the day and also ensured the stable would have two runners in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 11.

Currie fell past the post when he won on Rathlin for the partnership but showed no signs of it with a perfect ride on Away Game over 1110m at Doomben.

A $425,000 filly by Snitzel, Away Game had been 43rd on the Millions order of entry after running fourth in the Merson Cooper Stakes at her only previous start.

However, the $72,500 first prize more than assures she will be in the Classic field, a race Maher and Eustace had second placegetter Dubious this year.

Stable spokesperson Annabel Neasham said the stable had several other possible runners for the Classic, starting with Anders at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

“We are having a very good two-year-old season. I think that was our seventh two-year-old winner for the season,” she said.

“Rathlin and Away Game are both nice horses and now they are in the field there is no rush with them.

“The stable has had a bit of luck in Queensland and let’s hope that it continues.”

Smart ‘N’ Sexy ($7.50) came from well back in the field to finish second but was no match for the winner.

Co-trainer Trent Edmonds said it was possible the filly might press on to chase for a Millions start
