Kudero causes upset at Randwick
Clarry Conners’ stable is not as big as it once was but the trainer has managed to get one up on global powerhouse Godolphin at Randwick.
The Conners-trained Kudero ($18) came with a late run to beat $3.50 favourite Badajoz by 1-1/2 lengths in Saturday’s Cancer Foundation Handicap (1100m).
The four-time Golden Slipper-winning trainer said he was working about 22 horses at Warwick Farm compared with the 52 he had a few years ago.
“It’s hard to compete with the big stables now,” Conners said.
“And it’s great to see this horse win.
“All his feet are held together with Equilox but he’s so genuine.
“He cost $20,000 at the Scone Sale and he’s won close to half a million dollars.”
Conners said the Listed June Stakes in two weeks would be the next step for Kudero, which is owned in the same interests as recently retired stable stalwart Decision Time.
“We thought about sending him up to Brisbane but the money is so good down here,” Conners said.
“So we’ll stay here and hope we don’t get wet tracks. He is fine on a soft like today but any worse and it finds him out.”
