Jumbo Prince to reign at Sunshine Coast

There are few smaller horses racing in Queensland than Jumbo Prince and even fewer who have a better record.

Jumbo Prince has won 10 races and been minor placed 15 times for $748,000 prize money and will be out to add to that in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) on Saturday.

He is a favourite with his trainer Michael Nolan who knows he will always give 100 per cent.

“We don’t weigh our horses but he wouldn’t be much. He is a compact and nicely made horse but no giant,” Nolan said.

“But what there is of him is all heart. He has raced well against good company at two, three, four and now five years.”

Jumbo Prince goes to the race after first-up third in the Magic Millions QTIS Cup last Saturday week.

“They don’t get any easier for him. Have a look at his runs in the past year they have just about all been in stakes company,” Nolan said.

“It is the same on Saturday. He is up against a very good field. He has raced well at Caloundra on a few occasions so I know he will give his best on Saturday.”

Nolan will probably keep Jumbo Prince in Queensland this year.

“I never say no to anything and some people suggested he might make a Doncaster horse with a light weight,” Nolan said.

“But I don’t know how he would handle being away from his home stable. He isn’t the easiest horse to handle.”

“I am more inclined to run him in the Weetwood Handicap in April and then step him up in distances to races like the Brisbane Cup, Ipswich Cup and Caloundra Cup.”

Nolan will also run last-start winner Frightening Bolt at Saturday’s meeting in the Open Hcp (2200m) .

“He was a strong winner at Toowoomba last start and this isn’t the toughest open company race about,” Nolan said.
