Jockeys Callow and Melham appeal penalties

Jockey Noel Callow
Noel Callow has appealed a reckless riding ban and fine for his winning ride on Montoya’s Star.

Noel Callow will bid to recoup some of his losses when he appeals a one-month ban and $15,000 fine for his Group One-winning ride on Montoya’s Secret.

Racing NSW stewards took a harsh stand against Callow for what they said was a “win at all costs” ride on the filly in Saturday’s Vinery Stud Stakes.

They found him guilty of both reckless and careless riding and fined him $15,000 on each charge with the penalties combined for shifting out several horses in the final stages of the race.

Callow lodged an appeal on Monday against the reckless riding conviction and penalty and appealed the severity of the penalty for careless riding to which he pleaded guilty.

Fellow Melbourne jockey Regan Bayliss, who rode third placed Harlow Gold in the Vinery, was also outed for a month and fined $2000 for careless riding which stewards described as being at the high end of the scale.

Bayliss shifted in to take a run and Smart As You Think, ridden by Corey Brown, was lucky to stay on her feet.

The 20-year-old, who recently rode his first Group One winner on Redkirk Warrior in the Newmarket Handicap, announced via Twitter on Monday he would cop the ban on the chin.

“Deciding not to appeal my suspension. I apologise to the connections of smart as you think. Looking fwd to the Doncaster then a little break” Bayliss said.

Mark Zahra will ride Harlow Gold in the Australian Oaks on April 8 while Tommy Berry has been booked for Montoya’s Secret.

Golden Slipper winning jockey Ben Melham was another penalised on Saturday.

Melham was outed for two weeks for excessive whip use on Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Assign, a breach he committed minutes after stewards spoke to him about previous infringements.

The jockey has appealed the severity of the penalty which, as it stands, rules him out of the Sydney Cup on April 8.
